Help plan the planting

by Julie on May 19, 2008

Huge thanks to our Smackdown Superhero Sarah Holt, and to my wonderful hubby Bob and daughter Maia, who between the three of them got 7 cubic yards of dirt shoveled before noon on Saturday. Yes, that Saturday, with record high temps! We owe you big time. I’m glad you like zucchini. :-)

Now the burning question: what shall we grow? Everyone is invited to attend the planning meeting of the Garden Committee this Saturday. If you are saving seeds or starts, please bring a list. Think partial shade!

What: Garden planning meeting
When: Saturday, May 24, 10:30 am

Garden smackdown

by Julie on May 13, 2008

Huge thanks to Amy, Sarah and Bill for moving 5 cubic yards of soil last Saturday. It took the three of them just 90 minutes, a testament to their youth and vigor (and perhaps their morning beverage).

Let’s beat that record this Saturday. We need fresh arms and some 10-gallon paint buckets to move 7 cubic yards into the remaining beds.

Can we do it in just one hour? Yes we can.

What: Bed Filling, Episode II
When: Saturday, May 17, NOON
Where: Queen Anne Community Center, 1901 1st Avenue West

Please send an email or leave a comment if you can help. We’ll bring extra buckets.

I wanna touch the earth, I wanna break it in my hands, I wanna grow something wild and unruly. — Dixie Chicks

5 yards, 3 people, 1.5 hours

by Amy on May 11, 2008

We have successfully filled three big beds full of a blend of topsoil and compost! Thank you very, very much to Sara & Bill who helped. If not for them, I would’ve been stuck staring at a mound of 5 yards of dirt! (That’s 135 cubic feet y’all.)

Our next bed-filling bonanza is scheduled for Saturday May 17th - we start at 9am and would love a good showing. Big 10-gallon paint buckets work best. You can pick one up at the hardware store for $5.

See you there!

Time to Shovel Dirt (Rain or Shine)

by Julie on May 5, 2008

Okay, the beds are done! Now comes the dirt. The first delivery (five cubic yards) will be this Saturday, May 10 at 11 am (not 9 am, as posted earlier).

Consider it fitness boot camp!

Our Garden chair, Amy Pennington, will be leading the aerobics. She asks that volunteers be prepared for heavy lifting and shoveling. Bring gloves, shovels, wheelbarrows, and 10 gallon buckets, if you got ‘em. (If you have extra, please bring them for those who have none.) You may also want to pack a lunch and water.

We love children at our work parties, but this one features a huge, stinky pile o’ dirt, swinging buckets and sharp shovels, so parents may want to take turns watching tots at the new Big Howe playground. Your call.

Can’t make it this Saturday? Please come the following Saturday, May 17. We’ll have even more dirt to haul (seven cubic yards). Same drill, except we’ll start earlier, around 9 am.

See you there!

One bed left to raise

by Julie on May 3, 2008

Under today’s misty precip (Seattle’s free facials!), a hardy crew of volunteers constructed six raised beds of somewhat curvaceous Trex. Try as we did, we could not complete all seven beds before our electrical source (the Community Center) closed at 5 pm.

Our plan is to return next Monday, May 5 at 10 am and finish the job. We’ll have two drills and an extension cord. Please bring more if you can. We’ll also need some strong backs and a shovel or two to help lift, align and level the beds. Please email Julie Whitehorn if you can volunteer.

Thanks again to all the great volunteers. Check back soon for photos!

Bed raising!

by Kimberly on April 25, 2008

What’s a bed raising? It’s a community event, like an old-fashioned barn raising, but on a smaller scale. Before we can start raising food, we need garden beds. Because we want this garden to be easily accessible to everyone, we’re going to use raised garden beds. So we’re holding a bed raising to build seven beds for our first season.

When: Saturday, May 3, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Where: Queen Anne Community Center, 1901 1st Avenue West

Bring your power drills and goggles, your gloves and shovels, your hands and enthusiasm.

Hope to see you there!
